Arya Stark Is Not Mary Sue, She Earned Her Destiny

Movies July, 06, 2025

Arya has been resourceful from the very beginning. While despite her years of horrific childhood experiences and her slight appearance could suggest. She was forced to face the challenges after being orphaned. She was first dean outshining her brothers with bow and arrow during childhood. Her wide-eyed love for weaponry became her means of survival, revenge, and means of protecting her own members of the family. During her long period of training, she is blinded and beaten and stabbed in the guts with the teaching of carrying the face of a dead.

Although Arya’s victory didn’t settle well with all the viewers. Some of them even started accusing the showrunners of creating a ‘Mary Sue’ character. For people who are unfamiliar with this term, the meaning is usually female, who is seen as too perfect and almost boring for lack of flaws, originally written as an idealized version of an author in fan fiction.

Comparing Arya with Mary sue is in no way justified. Everything shown in the climax from her was so far built up for that moment. Many fans came forward with proper justification for that scene. All in favor of Arya’s victory mentioned all the training she had gone through to rightfully own that scene. Her training was widespread over 6 seasons and shown in detail. So the fans had an outrage on how can you miss that training period.

People who were not in favor of the end got trolled by the fans who supported the story and many famous people tweeted in favor. Carolyne Larrington, tutor in Medieval English Literature at the University of Oxford said: “from the day we first saw her in Winterfell in S.1, ep.1 – taken her along a path that’s unconventional enough for a girl, but entirely fitting for a hero”. Even the Night king- played by actor VladimírFurdík said it was a good decision.

Arya Stark was compared to her sibling Jon snow also known as king in the North and many more titles. People who criticized the end said Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen deserved the chance to kill the Night King. This is where fans said that Jon learned to ride a dragon in 5 mins where Arya risked her life living as an orphan. Maisie Williams who played Arya Stark also knew that everybody would hate it; that Arya doesn’t deserve it. Sadly, even the boyfriend of Williams appears to think Jon was the character more deserving of becoming the slayer of the Night King.

No doubt Jon Snow worked hard to earn this level of respect and advanced skills of dragon-riding skills have been attributed to his Targaryen blood. But in the end, Arya’s victory is justified according to the storyline. She trained harder than anyone else and became a killing machine
