Dad-Daughter Duo Became Video Game Buddies Thanks To Adaptive Technology
Nora is differently abled. She was healthy at the time of her birth but unfortunately got diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder when she was 6 months old. Her condition of Spinal Muscular Atrophy resulted in severe motor function damage, making her unable to use her muscular strength virtually for any big or small task, for example, inability to move, breathe, cough, or swallow. Nora’s mother is a TikTok user who goes by the name @goodentreemom.
She along with her husband document small but significant milestones in life of sweet Nora, which is received with a lot of affection by TikTok community. Nora’s parents were determined to provide an optimal life to their daughter. They wanted to give her a quality life where she has indiscriminate access to every opportunity and happiness in her life. Nora experienced the subtle joy of spending time with her dad like any other average child, thanks to adaptive technology equipped in video games like Minecraft and Xbox.
Nora was seen playing Minecraft Dungeons in a heartening video uploaded by her mom where she is gaming happily with her dad. The video was impactful and resonated with all the dads out there. New-age technology which enables this surprising feat is phenomenal. This was made possible by equipment of eye gaze bar and switch controllers which allowed Nora to move efficiently, perform attacks and do tasks in the game with absolute ease, it was clear she had no difficulty catching up to her father.
Custom made controllers have marked the market in the past but there is an emerging need for more accessibility features in gaming. We can hope for a wishful day when these controllers can be sold as official merchandise and readily available for everyone. Xbox recently announced that it is making efforts to better their accessibility and communication features so that players can fully enjoy the virtual gaming experience. Here, giving people a new launch update to earnestly wait for.
In the past, games like The Last Of Us Part 2 have dismantled and restructured their features from ground up to accommodate as many accessibility features as possible, benefitting several groups and catering to a wide ranged fandom. This was just a pioneer example of a relatively new technology and much more astonishing feats are expected from it in the near future. Last Of Us and Nora’s experiences can only be counted as scratching the surface since a vast multitude of options are yet to discover.
It was comforting to conclude that sooner than we can imagine, everyone would be able to access technology and gaming as equals.
