Daredevil Actor Reveals Marvel Says Nobody Cares About Asian Characters
Marvel series bloom by disseminating the bits of thrilling plots and storylines. Fans bubble around to walk through the background of the characters to catch-up with the emotions and acts floating around. Grabbing the urge, Marvel thus often tosses in the background narratives. But the decisions are not always free from the stereotypes lurking on the Marvel board. The Canadian actor named Peter Shinkoda threw light over the issue.
Peter shot to fame with his iconic characters in ‘The Predator’, ‘I’, ‘Robot’ and ‘Godzilla’. Donning his mettle, the actor worked good lines for his character ‘Nobu Yoshioka’ in the Marvel series- Daredevil. The series began to weave the acme of fame in 2015 and finally halted his charm in 2018.
Nobu was on the side of the villain of the series- Madame Gao that Wai Ching Ho played. He was part of Madame Gao’s deadly group- The Hand. The actor appeared on the scene many a time to add to the evil intentions of the dreadful Madame Gao. He illuminated the show by appearing in nine episodes of the series between 2015 and 2016.
The actor opened up the unknown facets of Marvel board when he joined the other artists from the show at the “#SaveDaredevil” discussion. The character had supported the villain. But their relationship and background never came on the counter. Taking on that, he shared that there did come storylines for the characters. But the then Marvel Television Head named Jeph Loeb struck the proposals down. According to the head, nobody cared about Asian characters. He had gone ahead to cite the debacle of Marvel’s ‘Blade Trilogy’ to support his stance.
Giving in to the beliefs of Loeb, the writers had to write off his character’s narrative.
Thus, the link between the two evils never came off the covers. Not just that, the actor also went ahead to claim that neither of the two evils got an invitation for the premiere of season two of the series. But they were a part of the series then.
Taking on the issue, the actor shared, “I’m kind of reluctant to say this, but… I’m going to take this moment. Jeph Loeb told the writers’ room not to write for Nobu and Gao – and this was reiterated many times by many of the writers and show runners – that nobody cares about Chinese people and Asian people”.
Adding to that, he said, “I had to concoct this other storyline and rock that material I was given”.
The actor believed that his character would have met a better fate had it been written in the present times than in 2015.
Shedding light on that, he shared, “I think it would be approached a hell of a lot more delicately. Because I can see the difference. Two, three, four years difference? Huge”.
The perturbing revelations have churned the points of angst in the minds of the Marvel fans. Loeb has not come up to answer the remarks of the Daredevil actor.
Thus, only time will unveil the larger picture of the matter. But till then, fans have to hold back their nerves.
