Electric Parking Bays To Recognize When Petrol Or Diesel Cars Are Parked In Them

Science June, 30, 2025

Whenever an electric car owner saw petrol or a diesel car parked in an electric parking bay, he probably wrote a fuming note on the windscreen of the car and expected a traffic warden to come by for some help. But a sensor created by Appyway can now detect if petrol or a diesel had been parked in an electric charging bay. The sensor will also check whether the car was using the electric charging port. It can even alarm traffic wardens every time a non-electric car had been parked in those spaces. The violators would then be charged with a fine of £70.

The technology had been highly used in UK in the form of an app called ‘AppyParking’. This app had been very helpful for electric car owners as it helped them to find unoccupied charging bays. But only a single local council had been looking forward to use the sensor by Appyway. A spokesperson for Coventry Council said that they had not thought of enforcing this system in the present time but the sensors could be used in the future to inform enforcement officers about the misuse of these electric charging bays.

AppyParking gained popularity and had been greatly used in UK as it provided parking space information in nearly 400 cities. The company had already installed the sensors in electric charging bays of Harrogate and Halifax in Yorkshire. The company had also planned to install their sensor system in Portsmouth in 2021. These sensors had also been placed in the charging bays of UK’s capital, London.

Electric vehicles had gained popularity all around the globe and especially in UK as the sales of electric vehicles had doubled in UK in the past years. And the government had also planned to ban the sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. However, the lack in availability of electric charging ports had forced the local authorities to make sure that these electric charging ports were free of non-electric vehicles and were available for owners of electric cars.
