Innovative 8th Grader Eliminated Blind Spots In Cars

Science July, 02, 2025

Alaina Gassler is an innovative 8th grader residing in West Grove, Pennsylvania and she has found a solution to something that everyone so far has termed as unfixable and accepted the problem as it is. Yes, the blind spots in your car that come in way when you are making a scissor turn or moving your car in the reverse mode.

Aliana recently created an innovative system which eliminates one of the Blind spots in cars that is the A-pillar blind spot between the windshield and front seat windows. It is a very innovative idea for a 14-year-old and making it work is a huge milestone for her.

Aliana noted: “Many car accidents are caused by drivers not being able to see hazards due to blind spots, my prototype is designed to get rid of those blind spots by displaying an image of the area behind them onto the spot. I used a small projector as the displaying device and a webcam as the recording device. The webcam is mounted onto the outside of the car, and the projector displays the image only the A-pillar of the car.”

This invention is something extraordinary and is appreciated by everyone. The Broadcom Foundation MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) Program and the Society for Science & the Public have been so impressed by Aliana’s invention that the have even awarded her the Samueli Foundation top prize of $25,000.

Sharing the incident that made her invent a blind spot remover was when she saw her mother struggling with blind spots while driving. She said: “I wanted to find a way to get rid of them, and my older brother, Carter, just started to drive, so it was a big safety concern.”

Aliana and her father have searched for similar patents and have found some inventions from a decade ago and are now trying to acquire a patent of their own from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Sharing her plans for the future of her invention she plans on selling it to a company that can utilize it rather than starting her own company.

She noted: “Tesla is always looking for the future in their cars and I feel like my project would be something they’d be interested in.” we hope there are more things Aliana invent and help the people with such problems.
