Metaverse would bring a drastic change in the Gaming Industry
A survey was conducted to know people’s knowledge about the metaverse. To the surprise of many, the gamers came to be well aware of the concept. Additionally, they believed that the metaverse would change the gaming industry forever. As per 52% of gamers, the metaverse would bring a drastic change in the gaming industry and that change would be good.
The metaverse is the universe of virtual worlds. All the virtual worlds are interconnected and they could interact at their convenience. To be clearer, a metaverse is just like the novels such as Snow Crash and Ready Player One. The survey was conducted in May 2022 and it focused on the gamers’ attitudes toward their games as well as the world and their views on the concept of the metaverse. PC, mobile, and console gamers were the sample size for the survey.
The results of the survey were astonishing. The gamers even ranked the best gaming companies to come up with the metaverse games. Meta was ranked at the top with 73% of the votes followed by Epic games / Fortnight (27%), Roblox (21%), and The Sandbox (15%). Niantic was at the bottom with only 10% votes.
Not many people know about the metaverse yet. Although the concept is still in its initial stage, the gamers in the US were quite familiar with it. The credit must be given to the gaming companies. The gamers even believed that the concept of the metaverse has the potential and it could have a great future if enough research would be done behind it. It was believed that the knowledge of the metaverse would spread and become extremely common in the future.
The metaverse has a great scope in the advertising field as well. Although, as per the survey, the maximum number of people were not comfortable with using the metaverse as the platform for advertisements yet, they would surely give it a shot if they would be given free access. After all, everyone loves something free of cost as compared to the high costs given to advertising agencies.
As per the survey, the gamers play the games for the fun of them. Undoubtedly, there were some (40%) who wouldn’t mind earning along with playing the games. There were 11% of the gamers who just play games for the sake of earning, rest were interested in just having fun. The gamers believed that the metaverse would have a huge positive impact on the gaming world. They speculate that it would increase the fun of the game. Nonetheless, 25% of the gamers disagreed with the impact of the metaverse and 30% of them had no idea about the subject.
Perhaps familiarity is the key. Although the majority of gamers (60%) are confident in their ability to define the term "metaverse," this population's familiarity and interaction with the concept still need to advance. The competition between the ones believing that the metaverse will reach its advanced stage in five years and the ones believing that it won’t was quite close. Only 39% of gamers believed that the gaming metaverse will mature in less than five years while 38% believe it will take longer.
There were other findings related to NFTs and Cryptocurrencies in the survey. Only 16% of respondents were reported to have purchased NFTs. Only 34% of respondents were interested in carrying out cryptocurrency transactions, leaving 20% of respondents undecided and 45% uninterested. Among the interested ones, 41% were men, and 37%–47% were people between the ages of 18 and 44.
The poll included 1,000 American adults (18 years of age or older) who play more than three hours of video games every week on PC, console, and/or mobile platforms. Nonetheless, gamers who solely played on mobile were excluded from the poll.
