Movies Have Been Disappearing From Disney+ Since January
The perfect example of this removal is the Home Alone series which were available during the prior launch of Disney+ but the first two parts Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York had been recently removed on the New Year’s Eve. Now some of us might have been thinking that all Disney-related movies will always be available on this platform but some of them are being removed now.
This thought didn’t inculcate in our mind on its own because Disney had already told Comicbook about the same in November during the launch that the movies and shows will be permanently added as the Disney+ spokesperson said that there will not be a “rotating slate” of the licensed movies every month, unlike Hulu or Netflix. He further added that the beloved classics such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, The Lion King will be available from the first day of the launch.
Unfortunately, this has proved to be so wrong now as some movies have already disappeared from the service in just two months after the launch. So, what’s the reason behind the abdication? Let’s look at the report from Julia Alexander which shows that some of the Disney movies have run into the pandemonium due to the various legacy licensing deals but these movies are to be permanently added to Disney+ as soon as their license with the other parties expires.
Although, it is not a matter of surprise for the users of these streaming services to see some of the movies and shows being removed. But other streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu would at least inform the users about the updates related to their content.
Here, Disney+ didn’t do the same and the removal of the shows was a mere surprise for everyone. Now, it is unclear when the Home Alone series would reappear on Disney+ and there’s no surety for other movies as well. According to Bloomberg’s report, Disney movies like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Coco are expected to return to Netflix around 2026.
This is a sign that the above-listed movies might not be available on Disney+ from 2026 as per the deal between Disney and Netflix. Disney’s spokesperson further added: “Disney+ has the unique position of having a deep library of high-quality content across multiple premium brands, as well as a robust pipeline from its internal film and TV studios.”
The upshot of the whole story says that we cannot expect every movie owned by Disney to be available on Disney+ all the time. They are not likely to stay forever due to the legacy licensing issues. So, it would be better for the users to look for the movies of their choice and watch them soon because nobody knows if they are going to be always available to watch or not.
