Study Finds Video Games Are Good For Children
A recent study suggests that games aren’t the root cause of all problems related to children. The study concludes that children who regularly play video games (few times a week for a reasonable amount of time) are more inclined to benefit from their experience than to be a danger to our society. Though most parents would refuse to accept the outcome of this study it is legitimate.
The study was conducted by National Literacy Trust in the United Kingdom. The study reveals that video games can help a person improve their reading skills and creative writing skills. Along with this it also improves literacy skills and a person’s emotional wellbeing. The study surveyed 4,626 young people aged 6 to 11 in the United Kingdom. Almost three fourth (75%) of these kids thought that they were a part of the story which leads to their creativity and literacy skills. 65% of these kids could imagine being someone else due to the video games. This led to developing empathy.
Most of the parents also accepted that gaming helped their kids socialize and keep in touch with their friends and family during the lockdown. This was very important and it helped the mental wellbeing of these kids and kept them away from isolation and despair. The chat rooms and the social aspect of gaming certainly brings people closer and bridges the gap. It also develops a brotherhood and a feeling of belonging in these kids.
Jonathan Douglas, chief executive of the National Literacy Trust said “This research absolutely suggests that mechanisms that young people themselves already enjoy are the best ways to get them into the wider pattern of reading and writing. It’s exciting to uncover the opportunities that video games playing can provide for young people to engage in reading, stimulate creativity through writing, enhance communication with friends and family, and support empathy and wellbeing. COVID-19 has significantly disrupted young people’s literacy and learning in recent months and we want to ensure that no stone is left unturned when it comes to identifying new and innovative ways to support children’s literacy when they return to school in September.”
This study has certainly debunked some myths for us and cleared up things.
