Telltale Games Staff Revealed What Led To The Studio’s Closure
The company was already successful by the year 2010 with a greater yearly revenue as compared to the previous years. Telltale started working with comedy franchises during their establishment but later on, chose to work with dramatic franchises. They released games under a number of licenses such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Game of Thrones, Batman and many more.
More than 250 employees had to lose their jobs and this unexpected end can also be seen in the final chapter of Walking Dead as well, which remained unfinished in its final part. Skybound Games eventually took over the final episode of The Walking Dead but we need to look into the matter which led to this unfortunate transition. No doubt, the employees must have gone through a very stressful and difficult situation when they lost their jobs.
Game Informer, a video game magazine has published a report which describes the several circumstances that led to the decline of this Gaming giant. It may sound something strange that a huge company like Telltale was falling, but there were a lot of things happening inside.
The co-founder and former CEO of Telltale, Kevin Bruner told the publication that the huge success of the early seasons of The Walking Dead had already set a bigger challenge for them to maintain its popularity for the next seasons.
To make the other seasons successful, they were not willing to shift their ideology away from the actual concept of the game. This also made them afraid to take any further risks. The criticisms threw light on the fact that most of the later games had a feeling of being closely associated with the previous ones.
The company’s narrative designer, Emily Grace Buck informed about the misunderstandings and misinformation at several stages that caused the decline and also about the toxic culture inside the organization.
If there were any huge and sudden transitions in the game at the last moment by another employee, Bruner would make working there a hard time for them, as said by Buck. Bruner also told the Game Informer that he always had to seek for a chance to make the game even better.
They had to improve the content of the game in every way possible. As they did not have three-year-long production cycles, they had to do every improvement possible in a very short period.
Apart from the other projects, they had to establish an environment to work on several major projects simultaneously which also led to a hard time for the whole development team. It became very difficult for them to maintain the same level of success in every release of a game rather than becoming popular for just one game and then vanish from the path of success.
There might have been several other reasons that led to the closure and most of them are precisely described in this report. But we are sure that the Telltale Games will always be in our memory for its incredible piece of work created with extreme effort and passion.
