There are no bounds to Hank Pym's obsession with ants!

Movies July, 05, 2025

Dr. Hank Pym loves ants. He thinks ants are cool and capable of doing tons of incredible things many of which he has already tapped into using his Ant Training Device which uses electromagnetic waves to allow users to interact with and control ants. And given the Pym Particles he's developed which enable users to shrink down to small sizes while maintaining unbeatable physical strength (just like ants!) he also adopts the identity of "Ant-Man" and gives Scott Lang the Ant-Man suit as well as the name.

Hank is unquestionably the embodiment of Ant-Man inside and out even though he may no longer be wearing the Ant-Man mantle if only because he knows in his heart that ants are cool and that it's about time everyone showed them some respect. Hank frequently expresses his love for ants but in Marvel Studios Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania he also seems to be embracing his enthusiasm.

Writer Jeff Loveness states “Throughout these three films ants have always been somewhat of a joke so I wanted to write Hank Pym as the world's most cocky guy. I also wanted to roast Hank Pym for the whole of the film. Let people rag on ants have people fire some shots at ants and let people bash him for almost two hours of the movie but Hank gets to show just how cool ants are."

Hank won't hear about the "Ant-Man" any longer even though others have made fun of the concept including the other Avengers. You will need to bring up your ant issue with him if you do. Producer Stephen Broussard chuckles when he tells Marvel.com that the obsession with ants and the idea of Ant-Man are indeed strange and amusing but also awesome – totally awesome. "I believe that was just a little bit of an acknowledgment of like this is an odd obsession for this person who's really owned it."

For the next film the creative team was interested in going back to a core Ant-Man that hasn't recently taken center stage: talking to ants. Adding "It was always the most bizarre part and I liked it" director Peyton Reed As the film begins Hank has long since given up the identity of Ant-Man and is now spending some quiet time at home with his family after being reunited with them all. He is also seen using Pym technologies for basic chores that don't really spur change. "He's using that particle technology to grow a tiny pizza into a large pizza to save $8 and it was just like what are you doing man?" Reed exhales.

However Broussard notes that Hank actually needs this right now. "Hank deserves a minute to relax. His daughter and he had been apart for a long time. He had a difficult time finding the legacy of the suit. He had lost his wife to the Quantum Realm. He's doing well right now. Hank is a little more laid-back in this movie. He is a little more confident in himself and isn't as cautious as he was in the earlier films.

All of that changes when Hank's old habits resurface after the family is unintentionally drawn into the Quantum Realm. While he let Scott go wild as Ant-Man in the previous two films he is now included in the battle as well. He's ready to face the challenges of this movie when they knock at his door says Broussard. Hank is aware of his opportunity and knows when to shine. To become the patriarch of this large family who will defend it at all costs he is building on his decades of essentially serving as a super spy which is what Ant-Man was in the 1.0 iterations of that character.

Hank thus gets his time to shine once more but so do ants and his ant obsession in particular. Loveness makes fun of how Hank's obsession with the insects led everyone to ultimately "pay off Hank's love of ants over three movies."
