Dragon’s Dogma 2 Turns a Cult Classic Into a Messy Masterpiece

In many of the games you never know what is going to happen next. Every stage often has a new concept and story and a turning point. Dragon Dogma 2 also applies to this. What makes Dragon’s Dogma 2 different is that the game maker was unaware of the situations that would probably occur. 

When you go down that side path will you find a treasure of a troll’s lair? Will you have the chance to climb back up if you go off the edge and land on a rock? When will your friend start paying attention to you? Will the game run correctly for you to win a battle? These questions will come up often during the game and the answers could change if they cannot explain it. 

Curiously dragon’s Dogma(2012) also regularly experienced this. This game has a unique battle some character modification options many technical glitches and often poor presentation. This game became a timeless favorite. It is good to see that a game with this mixed material gets an additional title. However common sense suggests that it should highlight the good and correct the bad since the fixes seem very straightforward. 

Today the situation is precisely the same. Dragon Dogma 2 offers a significant improvement compared to the original title. A few more incidents happened that time. These events are often challenging. Character growth is more expansive. Opponent and companion AI are improved. Other quality-of-life changes are made to setting and operations. There is little doubt that the Dogma 2 group at Dragon heard and fixed the problem with the first game. 

Still this shows how stunning it is that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is often in many important areas just as unorganized as its precursor. The presentation could be better than several indie games. Many things could be improved. The controls are intentionally tricky. Entirely unexpected results are the most normal measures. There are different limitations to the AI of the challenger and the partners sometimes behave strangely. 

The technical ones are the most problematic. While playing Dragon’s Dogma 2 on PlayStation 5 I experienced only a few frustrations due to the game’s show. However early reconsideration shows that the PC version of Dragon’s Dogma 2 has many performance problems. These issues may influence all but the strongest PCs. Probably those problems will be handled as soon as possible. 

Thus it should be simple to provide a decision on Dragon’s Dogma 2. If you like Dragon’s Dogma you will most likely enjoy its problematic but often objective superior sequel. Many of the same issues you found with the original game will affect how much you like the follow-up. Given the time and work put into the sequel it is an incredible conclusion to reach but many people will like it. However I am not here to tell you that. I am here to tell you that Dragon Dogma 2 is a fun game that can easily make you forget your problems. 

I want to use the word “fun” more often than I do when discussing popular video games. The experience of playing a game and the pleasure you take from it seem to take a backseat to the business of appearing nice in an era when it seems like many triple-A titles are made to be invested in and sold on the strength of their sometimes manipulated advertising material. 



All such games are evaluated based only on technological qualities like microwaves and cell phones. While aesthetically pleasing and functional are acceptable they don’t always equate to fun. 

Much of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s enjoyment comes from a different word adventure which is challenging to apply to big recent games. That concept is taken for granted by far too many open-world games. They make the error of thinking about having big world games. They make the error of thinking that having a big world with much to do will ultimately result in a true sense of adventure. 

It is a common misconception that a broad environment with abundant activities will naturally produce a true sense of adventure. On the other hand games like Tears of the Kingdom and Elden Ring are the exact opposite of these titles because they recognize that true adventure occurs when you never know what will be around the corner. Still you always feel like you’re finding it for the first time and eventually need to figure out how to conquer it. 

You may now include Dragon’s Dogma 2 in the list of such games. Like earlier games dragon’s Dogma 2 frequently employs a high level of difficulty to give you the impression that you might not be fully ready for what will happen. Without any warning sign dragon’s Dogma 2 lets you immediately enter a dangerous area of the town.

Eventually when your strength is much greater you will still need to employ every tool to live (particularly if you dare battle at night when the difficulty increases). Since you’ll probably need to utilize them all this strategy ensures that every item you get skill you gain and mixture you create genuinely matters. 

But it is not just about the obstacles. Dragon Dogma 2 makes virtually every move seem like a natural extension of your character and crew. If you want to live you must constantly play to your chosen strength (or weakness). However unlike other games this does not imply a limited set of talents and advanced weaponry. Instead it would be best to learn about your character while constantly honing your skills against various opponents that usually behave unpredictably and are seldom destroyed by a single technique. You cannot continuously overcome obstacles if you do not know how to adapt.
