Live Science Demonstration Broke All The Stereotypes In A Fashion Competition
24-year-old Camille Schrier had a different idea when it came to the talent portion of the Miss Virginia Competition. While everyone was performing musical abilities and dance moves she decided to do a live science experiment in the talent showcase round. Then there was a huge risk in doing the demonstration on the stage for the final round but she went ahead with it and ended up winning the Miss Virginia Competition.
She demonstrated “catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide” and it is also called The Elephant’s Toothpaste. There is a chemical reaction when hydrogen peroxide comes in contact with potassium iodide. Camille warned the judges and the audiences about the experiment before she started demonstrating it. After the chemical reaction took place and the substances combined there was an eruption of colored foam which erupted from the beakers and both the judges and the audience was delighted to witness it.

The main aim of her doing was to change the perception of people when it comes to pageants and fashion shows. She wanted to make a statement which was “I am more than Miss Virginia. I am Miss Biochemist Miss Systems Biologist Miss Future PharmD looking toward a pharmaceutical industry career. Now was the time for me to create a mind shift about the concept of talent by bringing my passion for STEM to the stage. To me talent is not a passion alone but also a skill which is perfected over years of learning.”
She wanted to tell everybody that all these competitions have more than some small clothes dance moves and singing. Both beauty and brains work in these things. She also wanted to tell people that they have to keep an eye for science and observe it as it is everywhere. She also wants to break the stereotype of women and science which most people have.
She believes that everybody is equal and should be seen as equals. Equal opportunities should be given to all and one should not be judged on the face values. She has nothing against music and dance but wants to make a statement that beauty pageants are much more than that. She wants to make sure that once a person wins any pageant that is not all them defines him or her there is more to any person.
A person should be judged and scored based on the personality and talent they possess. Not everybody is good with music and dance and they should not feel guilty about it. No one should limit themselves at any stage. One should keep moving forward and should continuously keep on challenging themselves. Life is all about challenging yourself and proving yourself to yourselves.
Camille was successful in wowing the crowd and the judges with her live science demonstration. Not only she was able to wow everyone but she won the Miss Virginia Competition and broke a stereotype of women and science.
