Hughes' Early Draft

But what did Hughes think of all this? In one of the earliest drafts of the screenplay Marley DID make small talk with Kevin in the House of Worship on Christmas Eve. However it was Columbus who gave Marley a backstory and humanized him.

Hughes' version of the ending depicted Marley rescuing Kevin from the burglars by wielding his snow shovel as a weapon. It was later agreed upon to include an additional scene where Marley is reunited with his estranged son and granddaughter. Although Hughes wrote an initial draft of the idea it was Columbus's unique contribution that made it what it is - a memorable ending that generations continue to adore year after year.
